Feeding Squirrels On My Way To Work

Saturday, May 31, 2003

The three bills I paid this morning all went toward owning our car. Union 76: $12.36. Texaco/Shell: $14.36. (There was a trip to Olympia and back in there.) One month of insurance: $137.19.

I'm on my way to get our car its first oil change. (Four months old today. 1679 miles.)

If I ever get to Georgia, I want to visit The Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum.

Actually, I wish the Smart was sold here in Seattle.

There is a popular opinion among bus riders that says it is always better to walk 2 blocks to your destination than to walk a half-block back.

I see this every morning on the 7. A big crowd of students exit at the last stop before campus, at Campus Parkway and University, even though it means crossing three intersections to get to the heart of campus: Red Square. Almost no one exits with me at the next stop, at 15th and 42nd, even though it puts me right on the edge of campus, on the correct side of the street, just past Red Square. Neither way saves any time - I always meet up with that big crowd just before we all reach Red Square.

I saw it every morning on the 43, back when I rode it in to work. There's a popular Flyer Stop, at Montlake and SR-520. Lots of people exit a block and a half before, and cross an intersection, to get to it. Almost no one uses the stop 40 feet past it, with no intersection to cross.

It's been decades since I last read Winnie The Pooh. For some reason, I thought I was going to breeze through this little collections of stories. Instead, I get so caught up in the clever language that I can barely make it through one story on my bus rides home. How long is it going to take me to get through three books?
